Willem Dafoe's Green Goblin has been a beloved and staple villain in the Spider-Man universe, first appearing in Sam Raimi's 2002 film Spider-Man, and, since then, Dafoe has stepped into. There’s a sense of genuine affection in his interactions with his Peter Parker (Tobey Maguire), laced with enough anger simmering beneath the surface about how he feels the world has mistreated him. With Green Goblin in control, he fought Spider-Man, resulting in his demise. There’s a balance of ego and desperation to the character that explains things like his decision to test a prototype super soldier serum on himself. Doctor Norman Virgil Osborn is a scientist and CEO of Oscorp, who experimented on himself with an incomplete enhancement serum, causing Osborn to develop an alternate identity, the Green Goblin. 3 At this time his identity was unknown, but he proved popular and reappeared in later issues, which made a point of his secret identity. Osborn is just vulnerable enough to remain sympathetic as he slips into insanity. 2 The Green Goblin debuted in The Amazing Spider-Man 14. In fact, the actor delivered such a standout. Dafoe’s Osborn is larger than life, as a supervillain should be. Reprising the role of Green Goblin hed previously played in Sam Raimis Spider-Man trilogy, Dafoe was rather exceptional in the new film. Part of this came from a willingness to lean unashamedly into the operatics of the superhero genre in a way that turned the character into something of a meme himself. Working with director Sam Raimi on the original Spider-Man, Dafoe created a compelling take on Norman Osborn. Dafoe is unafraid of a heightened or stylized approach and willing to pitch his performance at whatever level suits the movie around it.
